The goal of the “Get There From Here” Scholarship Program is to promote academic excellence and provide an opportunity for outstanding members of Suffolk County’s diverse populations to attain their educational goals. This important initiative is made possible through a generous gift to the Suffolk Community College Foundation.
Approximately 15 scholarships will be awarded to students who are enrolled at the College for the fall 2010 semester. The maximum annual award will be $5,000. These funds can be used to cover tuition, fees, books and supplies. The scholarship is renewable for a maximum of five semesters. State and Federal aid will be considered when determining the amount to be awarded to each recipient.
ELIGIBILITY:
All residents of Suffolk County are eligible to apply for this scholarship. Preference will be given to new and continuing students who attend SCCC full-time and meet the eligibility criteria. A very limited number of scholarships may be awarded to part-time students who exhibit outstanding potential.
All candidates for the scholarship must:
Complete an application to attend Suffolk County Community College and receive formal acceptance, or be enrolled at the College full- or part-time;
Demonstrate college-level preparedness as verified by ACT or SAT scores, by the College’s CPT placement tests, or completed course work at the College with a GPA of at least 3.0.
Individuals who are awarded the scholarship must attend SCCC in the fall semester immediately following receipt of the scholarship.
Students chosen to receive the scholarship must commit to the following:
1. File a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form
2. Attend a pre-fall-semester orientation
3. Sign a Student Scholarship Contract
4. Remain continuously enrolled at the College and maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
5. Volunteer for 10 hours of community service per semester at an approved agency/non-profit organization
6. Attend at least three cultural events during the academic year
7. Attend workshops and seminars on personal and academic topics
8. Publicly represent the Foundation and/or the College’s student body when asked to do so
9. Participate in a service learning project, student ambassador leadership program, or an internship
10. Participate in one-on-one mentoring by College faculty
11. Meet periodically with the College President
12. Meet periodically with the coordinator of the Get There From Here Scholarship Program
13. Provide necessary information for the College’s use in statistical tracking before and after graduation/transfer
14. If necessary, access academic tutoring services and specialized advising/counseling
APPLICATION PROCESS:
Incomplete application packages will not be considered. The submitted application package must include all of the following items:
1. A completed College Scholarship Application Form
2. An SCCC transcript demonstrating a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 in college level course work
3. A volunteer agency certification form
4. A typed essay (maximum of two pages, double spaced)–To be competitive the essay should include evidence of the following:
Leadership and Community Service-The applicant may use examples of volunteer involvement in activities such as community service, contributions to a civic, fraternal, or service organization.
Persistence-The applicant may cite success in school or other endeavors that illustrate an ability to overcome obstacles such as financial hardship, physical or mental challenges, or a difficult family situation.
Career Goals-The applicant should include a discussion of their short- and long-term career plans and any efforts, such as cooperative learning experiences or volunteer activities that evidence effort toward attaining their career objectives.
5. Applicants must submit:
1) One personal letter of recommendation (e.g. from a community leader)
2) One professional letter of recommendation (e.g. from a current employer)
3) Two academic letters of recommendation

1) Ammerman Campus in Selden – Tuesday, April 13, 2010 – 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. – Mildred Green Room, Babylon Student Center
2) Eastern Campus in Riverhead – Saturday, April 17, 2010 – 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. – Peconic Building, Room P100
3) Michael J. Grant Campus in Brentwood – Tuesday, April 20, 2010 – 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.- Captree Commons, Room C114
The scholarship selection committee will review completed applications received on or before the application deadline of May 1, 2010. Awards will be announced in June.
